An online workshop where you can learn from Mr. Kato, a craftsman from "Kato Miso," a miso brewery in Kyoto.
This time, he will also specially teach us how to prepare "white miso," which is not usually done in our regular workshops. We will prepare two types of miso from raw koji: traditional "country-style miso" and white miso.

On the day of the event, we will broadcast live on Zoom, including a tour of the workshop and demonstrations. Ingredients The kit will be delivered in advance, so you can experience authentic miso making at home.

Things you need to prepare at home

Shouen Kumihimo / Established 1948

"Shouen Kumihimo" is a long-established company founded in 1948, that has been making kumihimo in Uji, Kyoto. Even in modern times with advancing mechanization, we carefully craft each individual kumihimo, valuing traditional techniques while utilizing both "hand braiding" and "machine braiding." Multiple threads are intricately woven together by the hands of artisans to form a single braided cord.

Bringing the traditions of Kyoto to your home.

We will deliver a real-time online (Zoom) tour of the workshop and demonstrations by craftsmen. Since you can participate from anywhere, you can join with your family and friends.

Witness the creation of "Kyo Kumihimo"

Hand-braiding involves sitting upright on a stand and freely manipulating about 60 wooden balls hanging on either side to create a single "kumihimo" (braided cord).
You can also experience the realistic kumihimo making process, including the intricate mechanical braiding process, which resembles a karakuri (automaton), and the sounds unique to it.
Through conversations with traditional craftspeople, you can experience their techniques and the culture behind them.

We will deliver the materials to you in advance, so you can experience authentic kumihimo braiding at home.

Silk thread is available in 3 colors.

"Shouen Kumihimo" also dyes silk threads in-house. On the day of the event, participants will create an original strap using their beautiful, lustrous 100% silk threads. You can choose from three colors: "Fuji" (wisteria), "Asagi" (light indigo), and "Wakakusa" (young grass).

Learn three ways to assemble it

"Kyo-Kumihimo" has hundreds of braiding patterns.
On the day, we will teach three of them: "Yatsugumi", "Kongogumi", and "Hiragumi".

A set of craftsman's actual tools and a weighted ball.

This set includes weights that are actually used in hand-knitting workshops. You can experience kumihimo making while using authentic tools.

Toshi Hatta (Shouen Kumihimo Assistant Manager)

Born in Kyoto City. After graduating from university, he gained experience in manufacturing through various activities and joined Shoen Kumihimo Co., Ltd. in 2011. He primarily learned the techniques of braiding kumihimo using braiding machines, as well as manufacturing tassels and processing products. Since 2015, while belonging to the sales department, he has continued to propose the charm and role of kumihimo in modern times by meeting various needs, such as new product planning and application proposals, based on his manufacturing knowledge.
