“HANAO”, an essential item for Japanese people's fashion

“HANAO SHOES” is a new standard that puts the “HANAO” into the modern sneaker. Hanao has been used to color the feet of Japanese people for hundreds of years on zori and geta . In the spring of 2024, a new version of HANAO SHOES was born, with which the customers can change the “HANAO” themselves.

Choose the “HANAO” and make your own sneakers

The sneakers are now available in black, and the “HANAO" is now removable, making it a sleeker sneaker.

You can now customize your own pair of HANAO SHOES to suit your own style just by having one pair. The sneakers are made by MOON STAR (Kurume) and the “HANAO" are all handcrafted by Japanese craftsmen.

Shoichi Chiba / Craftsman

Unlike standard indigo dyeing, which can be done year-round with added heat, the traditional "Shoai Hiyasome" of Kurihara in Miyagi Prefecture is one of Japan's oldest dyeing techniques, relying solely on natural fermentation without artificial heat. This process is only possible during a brief period in early summer. As this ancient technique declined after the Meiji era, it was preserved by the first-generation artisan Ayano Chiba, designated as a Living National Treasure, who maintained the traditional methods. Now, Shoichi Chiba carries on as the fourth-generation artisan, inheriting both the technique and the workshop. "Shoai Hiyasome", created using only natural materials, is known for its softness and beautiful coloration.

Wear them on a sunny day

Because the HANAO is filled with cotton and patterned paper, it will lose its shape when wet. We recommend removing the HANAO when it rains or when washing the shoes in order to keep wearing them for a long time.
