下駄とHANAOSHOES

“HANAO”, an essential item for Japanese people's fashion

“HANAO SHOES” is a new standard that puts the “HANAO” into the modern sneaker. Hanao has been used to color the feet of Japanese people for hundreds of years on zori and geta . In the spring of 2024, a new version of HANAO SHOES was born, with which the customers can change the “HANAO” themselves.

Choose the “HANAO” and make your own sneakers

The sneakers are now available in black, and the “HANAO" is now removable, making it a sleeker sneaker.

You can now customize your own pair of HANAO SHOES to suit your own style just by having one pair. The sneakers are made by MOON STAR (Kurume) and the “HANAO" are all handcrafted by Japanese craftsmen.

KYOORIMONO(寿)

From Nishijin-ori obi fabric.

With its intricate weaving and gentle colors, it achieves a look that is both elegant and serene.

The HANAO are crafted from obi fabric adorned with various seasonal flowers, including cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and chrysanthemums, as well as butterflies, symbolizing good fortune.

KYOORIMONO(巳)

From twill weave (Ayahori) fabric.

Unlike Nishijin-ori, twill weave fabric is not woven by alternating warp and weft threads but by offsetting them.

This creates a distinctive diagonal pattern where the threads intersect. Twill weave HANAO are rare, and when I selected three different colors, their patterns coincidentally resembled a snake (the Japanese animal sign for this year). We had them crafted just in time for the New Year.

Craftsman / Workshop

Yasumoto (Located in Uzumasa, Kyoto City)

Yasumoto specializes in handling traditional Japanese accessories, mainly using Nishijin-ori, and is involved in both tailoring and production.
The designs and colors vary, with some being subtle and others bold and dazzling, but all carry a consistent sense of elegance and style, embodying the unique charm of Yasumoto.

For this occasion, we have chosen fabrics from Yasumoto’s collection that celebrate the New Year, selecting pieces that are both glamorous and delicately designed to enhance the beauty of one’s feet.

How we crossed paths with Yasumoto(short story)

Wear them on a sunny day

Because the HANAO is filled with cotton and patterned paper, it will lose its shape when wet. We recommend removing the HANAO when it rains or when washing the shoes in order to keep wearing them for a long time.
