The sneakers are made by MOONSTAR, a shoemaker that has been crafting footwear in Kurume, Fukuoka for over 100 years. Every “HANAO” is handcrafted by Japanese craftsmen.

Comfort
The “HANAO” doesn’t pass through to the inside of the shoe, so you can wear HANAO SHOES with socks. The soft, flexible sole keeps your feet comfortable, even on long walks.
Attaching & Removing the HANAO Change your “HANAO” in seconds, no tools needed.
You can easily remove and change the “HANAO” on your HANAO SHOES yourself.
- Thread one end of the “HANAO” through the loop at the toe of the sneaker.
- Fold the “HANAO” in half at the center.
- Pass each end through the loops on both sides of the sneaker, then fasten with the buttons.
- Slip your feet in and adjust the shape of the “HANAO.” That’s it!
Please remove the “HANAO” on rainy days and when caring for your shoes.
Each “HANAO” is filled with cotton and paperboard, so getting it wet may cause it to lose its shape.
Kai Silk: its appearance changes depending on the angle of the light
"Kaiki" is a high-quality silk fabric used for the lining of haori coats.
It was woven extensively from the Edo period to the early Showa period, and has evolved alongside Japanese clothing culture.
The way the lining of the feathers hides beauty in places that are not visible embodies a sophistication that is unique to the Japanese.
Lightweight and durable, with an elegant luster that changes appearance depending on the angle of the light.
The soft pink hue brings out the gentle luster of the silk.

Founded in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, this long-established company has been carrying on the culture of silk weaving for over 100 years.
It has evolved alongside the culture of silk textiles, including Kai silk.
Inheriting the lineage of beautiful silk that was once shipped from Kai Province to all over Japan,
We currently continue to create materials that are in line with the times, such as rayon and organic cotton.
Hanao, the traditional footwear that has adorned the feet of Japanese people
"HANAO SHOES" is a new standard that incorporates the "hanao" straps that have been attached to sandals and geta sandals for hundreds of years and have adorned the feet of Japanese people into modern sneakers. "HANAO SHOES JAPAN" (Spring 2023) will produce 47 types of HANAO SHOES using locally dyed textiles from all 47 prefectures.
Then, in spring 2024, a new version of HANAO SHOES was born, allowing customers to change the straps themselves.
Choose your own thong and attach it to your sneakers
The sneakers now come in black, the straps are now removable, and the sneakers have a sleeker look.
With just one pair of shoes, you can customize your HANAO SHOES to suit your style. The sneakers are made by MOON STAR (Kurume), and the straps are all handmade by Japanese artisans.
Wear it on a sunny day
The hanao straps contain cotton and a pattern, so they will lose their shape if they get wet. To ensure they last longer, we recommend removing the hanao straps on rainy days or when washing your shoes.
Care instructions vary depending on the fabric of the straps, so please feel free to contact us.
