Fujiwara Foods "Kamogawa Natto"
The design incorporates the indigo (navy blue) and bean-dyed pattern used on the packaging of Fujiwara Foods' "Kamogawa Natto."
The white bean-dyed pattern on the indigo background used on the packaging gives it a simple and nostalgic impression.
The shape of a bean hidden in the bean-dyed pattern
Mame-shibori is a traditional Japanese pattern that has been around since the Edo period. The eye-like pattern is believed to ward off evil spirits, and as a single bean produces many seeds, it also embodies the wish for prosperity of descendants and good health.
This tenugui towel has the shape of a bean hidden within the rhythm of the bean-dyed pattern.
Produced by Ihara Dyeing
Ihara Dyeing Co., Ltd. / Founded in 1962
It is dyed by hand in 25m lengths by Ihara Dyeing Co., Ltd. In an age where dyeing is mostly done by machine or inkjet, this hand-dyed tenugui has a rich, heavy feel that is truly precious.
Collaborative production and design with KYOTO T5
This design was selected as part of a competition in which researchers from the Kyoto Center for Traditional Culture Innovation Research (Kyoto University of Art and Design) were asked to reflect on the cultures that are being lost that they have seen and felt in their research activities and turn them into designs.
