At Yokoyama Bamboo Store's workshop, you'll learn about the properties of bamboo and the tools used, then experience making a chashaku (tea scoop).

Afterward, you'll use the chashaku you made in a tea room within the Imperial Palace (or Kodokan) to enjoy a bowl of tea.

Through this tranquil experience, you'll feel the depth of the materials and culture.

Participation Guidelines

・Please come in comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty.
・In case of rain, some aspects of the program may be changed.
・The finished chashaku (tea scoop) can be taken home on the same day.

Precautions

・This experience includes walking outdoors. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
・For the chashaku making, you will be carving wood using a knife. We recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
・In case of rain, for safety reasons, some parts of the program may be altered (focusing on indoor activities).
・Depending on the weather and progress, the end time may vary.

・Children in elementary school or younger must be accompanied by a guardian.
・Participants are responsible for any accidents, injuries, or management of valuables during the experience.

・Photos and videos of the event may be taken and used for publicity on websites, social media, etc.
・If you have allergies or require any special considerations, please consult us in advance.

Cancellation Policy

Since this program involves preparation by a craftsman, the following cancellation fees will apply:

・Up to 14 days prior: No cancellation fee
・13 to 7 days prior: 50%
・6 days prior to the day of: 100%

※If bespoke preparations have already begun, actual costs (up to 100%) may be charged regardless of the above.
※No-shows and delays of 30 minutes or more from the start time will be treated as same-day cancellations.

Features of KYOTO CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOP

As Whole Love Kyoto, who are in daily contact with artisans, we will serve as "connectors" and guide you to workshops and handicraft sites that are not open to the general public. You will experience crafts not as exhibits, but as a "living culture" that is still used in daily life. Furthermore, by walking through the city from the same perspective as the artisans, you will deepen your understanding of its background and history. Since it is a small-group private tour, you will receive an experience tailored to each individual and get a glimpse into the cycle that supports culture.

Studio Tour | Yokoyama Chikuzaiten

You will learn about different types of bamboo (such as smoked bamboo), the characteristics of the material, and how it changes over time. By handling actual tools and materials, you will discover how bamboo has been used throughout history and the cultural context behind its usage.

Workshop | Chashaku Making

Under the guidance of an artisan, you will experience making a chashaku (tea scoop). You will work with bamboo, creating your very own unique piece. You will touch upon the individuality and delicate nature of the material, and experience the depth of handcraftsmanship.

Tea Ceremony Experience

We will move to the tea room, and along the way, we will guide you through the history of the town and its surroundings.
Afterward, we will use the chashaku you made to enjoy tea in the tea room.
Through this quiet moment of appreciation, you will experience the depth of Japanese culture woven by the tools, movements, and space.

Yokoyama Chikuzaiten / Yuki Yokoyama (4th Generation) and Megumi Tanaka (Bamboo Weaver)

This long-established company has been dealing in Kyoto bamboo and Sukiya architectural materials in Kyoto for over 100 years. They have supplied bamboo materials to the Katsura Imperial Villa, the Urasenke tea ceremony rooms, and Japanese gardens overseas, supporting tradition. At the same time, they are also working on developing bamboo products that fit modern lifestyles and "Yokotake fire-resistant bamboo" which is non-flammable. To pass on the charm of bamboo to the next generation, they actively hold workshops for making bamboo chopsticks, tea whisks, and baskets.
