Participation Requirements

・Please come dressed in comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.
・In case of rain, some of the activities may be changed.
・You can take home the finished lantern on the same day.

Precautions

・This experience includes a walking tour outdoors. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
・Washi paper and glue are used in the lantern making. We recommend wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.
・In case of rain, for safety reasons, some parts of the program may be changed (focusing on indoor activities).
・The end time may vary depending on the weather and progress of the activity.

・Children of elementary school age or younger must be accompanied by a guardian.
・Participants are responsible for any accidents or injuries during the experience and for the management of their valuables.

・Photos and videos may be taken during the event and used for publicity on websites, social media, etc.
・If you have any allergies or special needs, please consult us in advance.

Cancellation Policy

This program involves preparation by an artisan, so the following cancellation fees will apply:

・Up to 14 days prior: No cancellation fee
・13 to 7 days prior: 50%
・6 days prior to the day of: 100%

※If bespoke preparations have already begun, actual costs (up to 100%) may be charged regardless of the above.
※No-shows and arriving 30 minutes or more late will be treated as same-day cancellations.

Features of KYOTO CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOP

As Whole Love Kyoto, who are in daily contact with artisans, we will act as "connectors" and guide you to private workshops and handicraft sites that are not open to the public. Experience crafts not as exhibits, but as "living culture" that continues to be used in daily life. Furthermore, by walking through the city from the same perspective as the artisans, you will deepen your understanding of its background and history. Since it is a small-group private tour, you will receive a personalized experience and touch upon a part of the cycle that supports the culture.

Workshop Tour | Minori Yanase Shoten

Visit a lantern-making workshop and observe the materials, structure, and artisans' handiwork up close. It's a chance to learn how lanterns are made, experiencing the atmosphere of a workshop not usually open to the public and handling the tools. This will deepen your understanding of the long-inherited techniques and the culture behind them.

Workshop | Chochin Lantern Painting

Under the guidance of an artisan, you will paint on Japanese paper to create an original lantern. After selecting and practicing the characters, you will proceed to the main production. As you work with your hands, you will experience the characteristics of the materials and techniques, and complete your very own Kyoto lantern.

City walk｜Around Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine

Light up the completed lanterns and venture into the streets of Kyoto. By walking through the city from an artisan's perspective, you will uncover views and cultural backgrounds that usually go unnoticed.
Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, located further along the path, showcases lanterns actually crafted by Mr. Yanase, allowing you to witness how these lanterns come to life within the city.
As you experience the meaning of these lights, which have been used in festivals and daily life, you will come to feel the beauty that breathes through the night of Kyoto.

This long-established Kyoto lantern maker specializes in hand-painting and handles a wide range of products, from festival use to store decorations. They are indispensable in supporting the lights of Kyoto's cityscape and festivals, such as annually undertaking the re-covering of the lanterns at Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine. The delicate characters and patterns drawn with skilled brushwork embody the craftsmen's commitment to connecting tradition to the next generation.
