“HANAO”, an essential item for Japanese people's fashion

“HANAO SHOES” is a new standard that puts the “HANAO” into the modern sneaker. Hanao has been used to color the feet of Japanese people for hundreds of years on zori and geta . In the spring of 2024, a new version of HANAO SHOES was born, with which the customers can change the “HANAO” themselves.

Choose the “HANAO” and make your own sneakers

The sneakers are now available in black, and the “HANAO" is now removable, making it a sleeker sneaker.

You can now customize your own pair of HANAO SHOES to suit your own style just by having one pair. The sneakers are made by MOON STAR (Kurume) and the “HANAO" are all handcrafted by Japanese craftsmen.

HANAO SHOES_MINO TSUTSUHIKI HONZOME

Yoshida Flag Studio / Established in the mid-Meiji period

This long-established workshop in Gifu Prefecture has been hand-dyeing sumo banners, fishing flags, and noren curtains for over 140 years. Mino Tsutsuhiki Hand-Dyeing consists of two techniques: tsutsuhiki (tube drawing) and hikizome (pull dyeing). This tradition has endured for 140 years, thanks to Mino’s unique cultural background, with its many popular theaters, and the clear waters of the Nagara River, essential for the dyeing process. Each banner is carefully cut into smaller pieces and crafted into hanao, resulting in slight variations in patterns and colors. This process gives each piece its own character, so the pattern may differ slightly from the photo, adding a special charm to every pair.

Wear them on a sunny day

Because the HANAO is filled with cotton and patterned paper, it will lose its shape when wet. We recommend removing the HANAO when it rains or when washing the shoes in order to keep wearing them for a long time.
