LOCAL in Kyoto
I have created tenugui towels based on interesting things I discovered through repeated research in Kyoto. Not only are the patterns cute, but because they are based on time-consuming research into Kyoto, each pattern has a story and a reason.
Produced by Ihara Dyeing
Ihara Dyeing Co., Ltd. / Founded in 1962
It is dyed by hand in 25m lengths by Ihara Dyeing Co., Ltd. In this day and age when dyeing is mostly done by machine or inkjet (automatic), this hand-dyed tenugui has a precious, heavy feel to it.
Collaborative production and design with KYOTO T5
This design was selected as part of a competition in which researchers from the Kyoto Center for Traditional Culture Innovation Research (Kyoto University of Art and Design) were asked to reflect on the cultures that are being lost that they have seen and felt in their research activities and turn them into designs.
